Museum Night Fever Imaginary letter, guided tours, performances

Late night opening

Welcome to the extraordinary world of the painter, sculptor and author Antoine WIERTZ (1806-1865), one of the most controversial Belgian Romantic artists. In 1850, this true visionary had an impressive Atelier built at the expense of the Belgian State. The building became a Museum after the artist’s death in 1865 and was added to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in 1868. The place houses Wiertz’ monumental paintings, some of which are up to 12 meters long, inspired by the great masters of the past - Rubens, Michelangelo and Rafael - but also countless smaller sketches.

WIERTZ is well known for his depiction of dramatic subjects, as can be seen in Hunger, Madness and Crime, a painting that deeply impressed American artist R.H. Quaytman when she accidentally  discovered his studio/museum during her visit to Brussels back in 2019, while looking for local inspiration for her current exhibition at WIELS.

This extraordinary parallel WIERTZ-WIELS will be spread around by means of a flyer / imaginary letter written by R.H. Quaytman to Antoine Wiertz.

Four young guides (FR, NL, ENG, DE) will put their talents to use to summon Wiertz's rebellious personality and paradoxical oeuvre.

Eight 16-year-old dancers from the Modern Dance course of the Brussels Circus School, led by Lydia Mboko, will deliver together, solo or in duo, an embodiment the works of Wiertz and open another dimension within this intimate, yet majestic space. Music, song, movement, masked or uncovered faces: creative and revolutionary energy will be there!
