The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, with support of the Getty Foundation’s Paper Project, are organizing a workshop in conservation and management of a drawings and print collection relative to 19th and 20th century art.

The two-day workshop, titled ‘Fin-de-Siècle Art on Paper’ will bring together Master Students, PhD students and early career researchers with a special interest in drawings created between 1868 and 1914 with the objective:

  • to further the understanding and interpretation of drawing materials and techniques,
  • to support study on the subject of drawings from the long 19th century and expanding their research network,
  • to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their research, interact with peers and deepen learning about the conservation, management and digitization of a drawings and print collection.

The workshop will take place on June 30 and July 1, 2022 and will be held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and nearby partner institute the Royal Library of Belgium, making use of both rich collections of drawings, pastels and watercolors from the late nineteenth century. While the participants will discuss curatorial philosophies with experts in the field of art on paper, they will also take part in experiential sessions in which they can gain hands-on experience with artists’ materials and different conservation approaches.

This workshop aims at making print and drawing collections more accessible to young (Belgian) art historians. To that end, priority will be given to Master students. The workshop language will be English.

Travel and meal expenses will be covered by the organizer.

To apply, please submit the following documents to paperproject@fine-arts-museum.be by May 6, 2022:

  • A current CV,
  • A brief statement of interest describing relevant courses/research or work and how it would be enriched by this workshop (one page max.)
