Heteronormativity & Queer Art (EN) CANCELLED
with Deeviet Caelen
Through a new display, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium focus on the gender-related stereotypes. ArtxGender questions how images and artworks reinforce or challenge such representations.
This lecture explores paintings and sculptures that question and challenge established ideas of gender. Starting from selected works in the exhibition, it is complemented by images of other relevant pieces from the RMFAB collection.
The lecture also considers whether the collection includes works that resonate with the contemporary notion of “queer art.” This perspective extends beyond non-traditional gender representations to include expressions of desire within heterosexual norms. Additional works from other Belgian museums are included. All artworks are discussed in their historical context, acknowledging that the concepts and terminology involved are shaped by their specific cultural and historical settings.

Deeviet Caelen teaches Dutch at AP Hogeschool Antwerpen. He studied women’s studies, and feminist criticism. He works as a guide at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels, Bozar, KMKG, and KMSKA. He also created a Queer tour at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp.
